The Spa Ceylon Story
Nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean lies the teardrop isle of Ceylon, acclaimed since ancient times as an exotic tropical paradise rich in natural beauty. Deep-rooted in the culture of the island over centuries of time where natural relaxation, rejuvenation and healing rituals derived from Ayurveda, the 5000-year-old ‘science of life’ originated from the region.
Receiving great Royal patronage, Ayurveda became the essence of the majestic well-being rituals practiced in the grand palaces of ancient Ceylon. Derived from these Royal well-being rituals and holistic healing practices of Ayurveda, comes the range of treasured natural formulae and rituals from Spa Ceylon, to purify, hydrate, treat, soothe and calm the body, mind and soul.
Formulated only with the purest natural ingredients, Spa Ceylon’s high-performance products are enriched with powerful Ayurveda herbs certified organic essential oils, precious natural minerals, Virgin Coconut oil, rich Ocean salts and the finest spices from Ceylon. Designed to delight the senses, the formulae are infused with luxurious rich island aromas, blended with fine aromatic essential oils of exotic flowers, herbs, fruits and wood.
True to its island heritage, signature Spa Ceylon packaging incorporates Ceylonese Royal insignia, traditional motifs, native script and jewelled hues, combined with contemporary design.
Backed by a family business with vast expertise spanning over five decades in the manufacture of Ayurveda health & beauty care, Spa Ceylon was founded by brothers Shiwantha & Shalin in 2009. As at now, the brand has grown rapidly to establish itself as ‘The World’s Largest Luxury Ayurveda Chain’ with an expanding global footprint in over 80 locations across 16 countries in South Asia, the Far East and Europe.
Embodying the family’s integral values of caring for people and the environment, with a passion for continuous improvement and innovation, Spa Ceylon is strongly determined to give back to its island home. Today, the brand is actively involved in supporting community fair trade, sustainable harvesting of ingredients, wildlife conservation, prevention of cruelty towards animals, protection of human rights and protection of the environment.
At Spa Ceylon we have a fierce love for, and commitment to, the wellbeing of our community, country, planet and fellow creatures. We have applied that commitment at every phase of our business and nowhere is it more apparent than in the way we formulate our products.
Ayurveda in Ceylon
Considered by many to be the oldest of the healing arts, the word 'Ayurveda’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Ayus’, meaning “life” and ‘Veda’ meaning “knowledge or science”. Ayurveda is a holistic approach that treats the root cause of illness, in body, or mind. The knowledge of Ayurveda is believed to come direct from the Gods, passed on to the saints and sages of India during sessions of deep meditation.
Ayurvedic treatment is dispensed based on the distinct pattern of energy or Dosha possessed by all individuals. The three Doshas - Vatha, Pitha and Kapha are present in varying degrees in every one of us. Ayurveda aims to improve overall wellbeing and emphasizes the expunging of toxins from the body. Ayurveda has proved to be successful with some of even the most chronic diseases. Ayurveda offers countless advantages, not least of which is that it has absolutely no side effects.
The Ceylonese Ayurvedic tradition is a mixture of Desheeya Chikitsa (traditional Sinhala medicine) the Ayurveda and Siddha systems of India and the Unani medicine of Greece. The ancient Kings, many of whom were also prominent physicians, placed complete faith in Ayurveda and ensured nationwide respect for, and faith in the science.
King Buddhadasa (398 AD), whom the Mahawamsa credits with several remarkable operations on both men and animals, is renowned for writing the Saratha Sangrahaya, a comprehensive manuscript containing most of the Ayurvedic medical knowledge available in the country at the time. In modern day Sri Lanka, physicians still use this work today for reference purposes.
Ayurveda was not only revered by Royalty for its medicinal value - the Royals also put Ayurvedic secrets to good use for therapies that restored and rejuvenated for long lasting beauty. The most famous depiction of Ceylonese loveliness can be found in Sigiriya. The 200-metre-high Sigiriya rock functioned as the palace and fortress of King Kassapa, and houses what are now some of the most recognisable images of Ceylon - the nubile damsels that form the famed Sigirya frescoes.
The Royals of ancient Ceylon gave Ayurveda its due reverence, and the people of the island followed suit. Today, in our fast paced modern world, Ayurveda provides people from all over the globe with the answers to hitherto unanswerable questions, and the knowledge that our kings and queens possessed thousands of years ago - that with Ayurveda - benefits abound and healing is truly all encompassing, restoring balance, providing inner peace and calming body, mind and soul.
Beauty with a Conscience
The Principles behind every Spa Ceylon product
At Spa Ceylon we have a fierce love for, and commitment to, the wellbeing of our community, country, planet and fellow creatures. We have applied that commitment at every phase of our business and nowhere is it more apparent than in the way we formulate our products.
Each and every one of the products in our ranges are guaranteed:
- Paraben Free - Parabens are commonly used as preservatives and appear in everything from sunscreens to toothpastes. Parabens have been discovered to possibly contribute to serious medical conditions and while the proof of this is still forthcoming, we at Spa Ceylon have chosen to avoid the usage of Parabens altogether.
- Paraffin Free - Used as a lubricant and emulsifier, paraffin forms the base of many skincare creams. The bottom line however is that paraffin is actually derived from the petroleum refining process. In fact, Paraffin wax is the final by-product in the chain. We at Spa Ceylon have chosen to avoid the usage of Paraffin in our products.
- Alcohol Free - alcohol is used by many skin care brands in everything from cleansers to moisturisers. Ethyl alcohol or ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are included because of their effectiveness as preservatives and solvents. There are detrimental effects such as dryness, which allows other ingredients to penetrate the skin. With our products you can rest assured that you will suffer none of these side effects.
- Not Tested On Animals & 100% Vegetarian - Spa Ceylon has never and will never, test its products on animals. We believe that animals belong in the wild, not in the laboratory. No animal by-products. Everything we source is 100% cruelty free and natural.
- We promote Sustainable Harvesting & Support Community Fair Trade - Sustainable Harvesting is a form of agriculture that uses a resource in a way that ensures that it is not depleted or permanently damaged. Fair Trade means that we help develop sustainable businesses that have a positive effect on the surrounding communities. It also means that any produce we obtain from these farms is well and fairly paid for. Our Aloe Vera project in Kalpitiya is a great example of Fair Trade at work.

It is also a reputed anti-depressant, anti septic and a calming sedative. Considered to be an emblem of feminine kindness, jasmines are often given as gifts.
White Tuberose. With a fragrance that is akin to gardenia and jasmine but considered warmer and more exotic, White Tuberose essential oil is one of the most precious oils in the world, renowned for its distinctive scent, and credited for stimulating serenity and creativity. It is also a deeply sensual fragrance and is known as “Mistress of the Night” in certain parts of Asia. We found that it provided the perfect base for our White range for individuals with Pitha and Kapha Dosha.
Wellbeing with a Cause
Our goal is wellbeing on every level; from the ingredients we use, to the methods in which we source our products, we are proudly and transparently dedicated to working in beneficial and sustainable ways that ensure we 'give back' to the communities in which we operate, and to the amazing island we call home.
Our Save the Ceylon Elephant range sends 10% of every sale we make, into authorised projects designed to protect this most majestic creature. Our goal? To contribute to the practical resolution of the human-elephant conflict, to remove our elephants from the endangered species list and to once more see elephants in Sri Lanka reach pre-colonial era numbers.
Our Peace range also gives 10% of our sales back to community projects that are designed to rehabilitate people and areas damaged by war and to help fortify and build on the hard won peace that we, as a country and people are now fortunate to enjoy.
We are also particularly proud of our work in Kalpitiya where our Aloe Vera community trade-farming project has been providing sustainable livelihoods for 50 families. Set up in collaboration with the Marine & Coastal Resources Conservation Foundation in the arid Kalpitiya zone on the north-western coast, the project is a first of its kind when it comes to organized, large scale organic cultivation of Aloe Vera in the country.

Dosha Theory
It is through the balance of these three Doshas, namely Vatha, Pitha and Kapha, that the mental and physical wellbeing of each individual in determined.
Vatha DoshaThose with dominant 'Vatha' characteristics tend to be more on the fragile side and lean. Their constituency leads them towards dry scalp and hair with rough, wrinkled and sometimes-cracked skin.
Those with dominant 'Pitha' characteristics tend to be strong and are usually medium body types. They have weak and thinning hair, light skin that freckles and gets sun burnt easily.
Kapha DoshaThose with dominant 'Kapha' characteristics tend to be more on the larger boned side. They generally have soft and thick hair, skin consistence that is more oily, smooth and moist.
